Chili’s Employee Party ca. 1985

I worked at Chili’s in Knoxville around ’85 when it was freshly bought by Brinker (Maggiano’s, On The Border, Romano’s). This was before the days when corporate food ruled the Earth.

It was your typical restaurant scene: mostly 20 somethings, working hard for tips then spending it all on booze at the club across the street. (Some things NEVER change!)

Anyway, this was before the days of “holiday” parties that don’t allow booze and other corporate bullshit and our management decided to give us a summer party. I can’t remember if it was Memorial Day or Labour Day, but it was summer. They reserved Carbide Park (a national park in Oak Ridge TN that was created for Union Carbide employees back in the day) and told us that once the gate was closed, we were in for the night. This was how they got this approved, I’m sure. It prevents drinking and driving.

We all take pup tents and the store provided TONS of burgers and sides and three or four 6 foot long bar coolers FULL of booze. Yes, you read that right: FREE BOOZE. The party was supposed to be for the over 21 only, but I know that even the 20 year olds were there. I was one of them. ;-)

We get there in the afternoon and the cooks start grilling and everyone is WOO HOO! and getting drunk. Let me tell you something, for those of you who’ve never worked in a restaurant: restaurant peeps can DRINK. Everyone was wasted in short order.

Everything is blurry – it’s been 24 years! – but I do remember eating burgers and drinking everything in site. So the party rocks into the night and I remember few details of that. What I do recall is sobering up sometime in the night and realising that we are hungry. We stumble down to the grills and scavenge for some leftovers. Well, we found them: burgers that had been abandoned on the grill hours earlier! We were drunk enough to think that these were perfectly fine to eat, so we did. I also remember digging around in the coolers looking for ANYTHING to drink – water, cokes, anything – and only finding some opened bottles of white zinfandel (it was big in the 80s, but still as gross as it is now). We feasted on nasty burgers and white zin then we promptly ended up in the bathrooms violently ill from the BAD BURGERS we’d eaten.

I remember throwing up a lot, then crawling into a pup tent with someone and passing out. The next day we all had to help clean up, but as soon as they opened the gates I zoomed out and went home to sleep it off.

Yah, I still remember the little hot pink beach dress I wore – I loved that thing. I wore it OUT. And I was driving my ’79 convertible bug (baby blue w/ white top). I also remember the WOO HOO factor of this party. It was off the chain.

This sort of thing would NEVER happen today, but lemme tell ya: it was crazy fun. Despite the grueling work and the low pay, working in the food biz was a fun time for me. I can’t imagine working as a waitress my whole life, but for 20-somethings, it’s the perfect job. There’s little responsibility, no skills required and the money is ok. You can show up drunk and still do the job. And no one CARES.

Ah, I still get some warm fuzzies when thinking about my tour of duty in the restaurant biz. I wouldn’t do it now for anything, but I think everyone should work in the industry for 6 months. It should be required. Then perhaps everyone would understand how fucking hard the work is and why longterm restaurant people are usually fucking alcoholics and/or pot heads. And perhaps they’d understand how to TIP.

Ah, the days of my youth. 20, stupid and in East TN. Gods, I shudder to think of how I’d be if I had stayed there. But, I tell you, I did have fun. Lots of it! :-)

Heroes Con FTW!

Ok, let me tell all the comic nerds (readers, writers, artists, whatever): GO TO HEROES CON NEXT YEAR. If it’s the only con you attend, GO. We had the most amazing time. It was so great that I am still a bit agog trying to process it all. The organisers are awesome, the attendees are awesome, everyone there was truly off the hook with the nice and helpful. VERY SUPPORTIVE!

Highlights:
– We were INTERVIEWED!! Comic Related does podcasts to spotlight up and coming artists and offers a wonderful support system for artists like us who are trying to get a leg up. [Comic Related was retired, sadly. -A 2017]

– We met so many wonderful people it’s all a blur! First, a shout out to two lovely ladies that made us feel welcome as soon as we walked into the dealers room: Karalyn and Krystalanna! Great to meet you both! Can’t wait until next year!

– Super duper extra special shout out to Comic Related. You guys made us feel so at ease and welcomed. We are still on cloud nine from the interview and we THANK YOU so much for the opportunity. You totally RAWK!! :-)

I can’t say enough about this convention. The support and camaraderie there really makes you believe that you can do it (whatever “it” is). We are bursting at the seams with positive feedback and the feeling that there really are people out there who want to help us get known.

I’m just rambling now, so I’ll stop here, but you’ll hear more about this con as I process all the input we got this weekend. We will be at a table next year. And we cannot WAIT. :-)

Off to Heroes tomorrow!

It’s been a busy, busy week! Monday’s Atlanta Cartoonists meeting was awesome! My goal was 10 ppl and that is what we had! Yay! I tell you, only 10 artists and the talent was oozing off the table. I was impressed. Seriously, if this group is representative of the kind of high calibre talent we have in this town, then everybody needs to look out! Here’s the crowd:

The first Atlanta Cartoonists meeting!

Our Clear Wire experiment is going well. We will cancel ATT next week. We’ve been consistently pulling 4000+kps downstream and 500+kps upstream from it – and we’re only paying for a 3mps account, so I’m pleased. The bandwidth will come down as more ppl sign on, but living in the ghetto, I’m betting that it won’t be too crowded down here. I also don’t think it’ll stay under 3mps consistently like ATT. [This didn’t last long. Clear gave up quickly in the wifi market. -A]

Tomorrow we make the trek to Charlotte NC for Heroes Con! We are STOKED! This is a COMIC convention – no stupid costumes or any of that crap, just COMICS. Every publisher is there, plus all the small press and independent companies, too. We are taking about 30 Weasels to hand out to various publishers and such. This is a working con, so there will be much meet n greet going on. Next year, we will have a table.

Speaking of next year, the plan is to attend these cons as vendors rather than attendees: Phoenix Comic Con (Mem Day), Heroes Con (late June), San Diego (July, if we can swing it and find a booth to share) and APE San Francisco (Oct/Nov). I’d LOVE to attend WonderCon in San Fran in Feb, but I doubt we can afford it. Although, that would be easier to afford than San Diego!! I’m also going to revisit the master con list and flesh out all the regional cons we can drive to. Oh, yah and perhaps do a table at DragonCon. You all know my feelings about that convention and the slimeballs who run it…

So the plan is to hit it hard next year – all things being steady with work and money. We are doing some tests for Weasel tshirts, please hop over to spreadshirt.com and give us some feedback about the designs, prices, etc. We want to know what everyone likes the best before we order a shit ton of them for cons!

Our pal James (whose wife Becky does Little Vampires) ordered a Weasel T from us and is doing a spectacular job of modeling it, too! Thanks, dude!

Ok, enough tweety tweets, facey pages and bliggity blogs. Gotta get some work done!

It’s Friday and almost 5pm FTMFW!

Hells yah!

It’s been a long week and I’m so looking forward to our cheating weekend. Our diet is stringent during the week, but we can drink on the weekends, so WOOHOO!

Got the first pass of the dentist site sent out – of course they don’t work on Fridays, so I’ll not hear back until Monday.

Speaking of Monday, that is the first meeting of the Atlanta Cartoonists! I’m so stoked!

Tomorrow, I think we’ll go check out the tiny little Sci Fi Summer Con up in Marietta. I’ve not heard from Caroline/Dru, so no clue if they are going or not.

There’s a cool event going on at Alcove Arts: Art B Q! There is music tonite and an all day picnic/BBQ tomorrow! We might venture over there to check that out later tonite when it cools down.

And here’s a pic of my poot head orange stripey cat who hurt my feelings yesterday:

Rotten DJ after making me CRY!

But for now, I shall go forth and wait for my booze bearing Weasel to arrive with libations! Have a great weekend y’all! :-)

Treadmills!

As you know the ProForm Cx10i treadmill we had finally got so many issues that we had to get rid of it. I found another ProForm on Craigslist that we decided to buy. The girl was teh dumb and could not figure out what model it was (uh, try the BIG 2″ LETTERS ON THE FRONT, TARD!) but I took a chance and decided to buy it even though I couldn’t find the HSN model # online. She came down from $500 to $400, and the thing is brand new, so we took the plunge.

We went to pick it up yesterday and got the correct model #, which is 680 LT. I still couldn’t find the model in the TreadmillDoctor.com database, but did a search for it and found out it’s a $1299 treadmill!

The chick paid $669 or so from HSN in March – which explains why she said it was a “great deal” when she bought it. Well, without a model number (HSN is notorious for not having model #s on their site) it was difficult to surmise which unit she had, so I’d been looking at the $699-799 models, assuming you wouldn’t save more than a coupla hundred on HSN. Man, was I wrong!

We are thrilled and impressed with this new Rack. It’s whisper quiet other than the screaming beeps when you make selections. It’s got a stereo system and the beeps are run through it – without volume control, apparently. Not only do we now have a $1300 treadmill for $400, but it’s never been registered, so we get the full warranty coverage, too. SHWEET!

So despite this weekend starting off rough, it ended up with us getting a spooty new Rack and getting rid of the old one, too! Some guy from Freecycle picked it up with his Ford Probe (it actually fit!), saving us from having to haul it to Salvation Army. YAY! I love it when a plan comes together!
