More fun for us!

After the drama with the harddrive, there was more drama in our ‘hood. I got the menu finalised and sent off to the printer just minutes before the windstorm brought down 2 large trees at the house on the corner. Of course this took out the power, phones and cable. Which is why I’m writing this from NuVision Graphics… I’ve got pix, but can’t be bothered to find an ftp client and all that shit on this borrowed machine.

GA Power came out and got the lines back up, but since they were contractors who apparently don’t know much about actual POWER, there was only a trickle of power coming in. So, we had to call GA Power AGAIN and they sent out Larry the Power Guy to fix it.

Seriously. This guy rolled up in a bucket truck, all alone to fix our power. I’m sure that’s about 10 OSHA violations right there. Then he worked on the lines with his bare hands. I kid you not. He was a Good Ole Boy and he damn sure got the job done. What does Larry say? GIT ‘ER DONE! Indeed.

AT&T had a truck out and they picked up the lines but did not get the phones working. They left promptly at 6pm – fuck us. Today an AT&T truck came to scope it out and just drove off. NICE.

In addition to this aggravation, there have been bad things happening to some of our friends. Caroline and Dru lost Dru’s dad a few days ago and Emily’s ex husband lost his dad, too. Then Emily found out that her mortgage company has had its credit lines dropped, which means no more job.

FUCK ME. Remember what I said about that number 11? Well, here ya go. Challenging, no?

So, that’s the state of affairs at Casa Misangela. If you need to contact me, cell phone is best until further notice. I put 90 minutes on my damn phone yesterday. 90. That would be $16.20. Most of that was on hold with the various utilities. SUCK. So, don’t call me unless it’s important, please. There’ll be time for chatting when ATT decides to get our phones/DSL back up. Wankers.

Speaking of wankers and Larry the Cable Guy, the next post is a flame not to miss! Just in time for me to vent some of my pent up aggression, too! SHWEET!

Hard drive update

Update chat from my BOFH the Weasel:

“the highest number of errors i usually run across, if any, is about 3-5
yours had 150
you’re a lucky woman
you’ve been tap dancing in a mine field for awhile”

It’s a blessing in disguise. Not only will I get a shiny new HD with an OS upgrade, but all my apps will get upgraded, too! Yay!

I’m sure I’ll find plenty of fucked up files when all is done, but all in all, I think I fared well. Even if I’d lost everything, I just had a backup Sunday, so.

Tomorrow I’ll be on a new HD with 10.5.x and other new stuff. I’ll also start running Time Machine on a second drive just as an extra redundant backup. :-)

This is a good time to remind you lazy bitches to BACK YOUR SHIT UP WEEKLY OR AT LEAST MONTHLY. If you’ve got a Mac running 10.5.x, then get an external or internal backup drive and turn Time Machine ON. Time Machine is a very slick backup system. We highly recommend it. (That humming sound better be the sound of cds/dvds being burned for backups…)

Hard drive go BOOM

Yah, so I’ve had zero issues with my hard drive, but last night Nick decides to do some dvd ripping on my Mac. That intensive hard drive work revealed some serious issues with my hard drive. Since most of my work is online, I don’t use my hard drive as much as, say, someone who designs and saves all day or whatnot. My usage habits have been hiding some really fubar problems.

So, last night after Stormy leaves, I learn that my hard drive is barely alive and it was a miracle that Nick got all my shit off it. Big thanks to my Weasel for staying up late to babysit the data transfer. ::smooch::

I’m running off the backup drive today. I will get the menu job out on time. I’m damn glad it’s the only active project I have with all this shit going on.

My email client is completely hammered. It’s gonna take a lot of work to get that mess straightened out. I can still get email, of course, but my local client? I’ll probably toss most of the emails in there and start relatively fresh. If you’ve sent anything important between yesterday afternoon and 10am this morning, you might want to send it again just to be safe.

Yah, nice way to start the day: a dead hard drive, fucked up email and Aunt Flo! Wow, the trifecta. >:-(

Needless to say, you should probably just avoid me for a day or two.

::low growl in throat::

RIP Majel Barrett Roddenberry

I don’t know how the hell this got past me, but the First Lady of Star Trek died on Dec 18 2008 at the age of 76. She died peacefully in her sleep with family around. She had leukemia. Her funeral was held yesterday in Los Angeles. This article has more info about Majel as well as the charities they’d like fans to donate to in her name.

OR you could make contributions to your local shelters to help your local displaced pets.

It’s a sad time for Star Trek fans. Now there is no one to hold the reigns. If the trailers of the JJ Abrams atrocity are any indication, I’d say we’ve seen the last of decent Star Trek productions. The franchise will never be the same. :-(

In other news…

Aside from being in Joomla! hell, I’ve been a busy little beaver today. I’ve added a new plugin to WP (Gallery NextGEN) so I can do some cool stuff with my headers. I did the next round of tweaks to the Taqueria menu. I cleaned out and organised my bookmarks. Lots of little things to make my digital life neater.

When I was talking to Paul (the owner of ITX my web host) last night, he told me that John Travolta’s site is hosted with them and they’ve been running wild trying to stay ahead of the traffic. When his son died, Travolta’s site was hammered. It was just a little ole shared server site and they had to not only move it to its own server, but they had 5 servers plus a load balancer on it to keep it up last night. And even that was to the brink of overload. Crazy, eh?

We had dinner with the Piazzas Saturday night after seeing the disappointing movie The Spirit. (Frank Miller: do NOT direct EVER again.) Dinner was delightful with YellowTail Shiraz, Spinach Dip starter, beef tenderloin au poivre with pepper gravy, haricots verts in citrus sauce and loaded smashed potatoes (baaaaaacon!). We had a delectable green tea crème brulée for dessert. Mmmmmmm. Our tummies were SO full! BIG shoutout to Stormy and Mistah J for having us over. :-)

Hmm, what else? I’ll be happy to get back on a schedule. Nick is finally back to work tomorrow and we’ll be on the diet bandwagon once again. Bleh. My wrist hurts, so I’m gonna call it a day. L8r!
