Occasionally, I’ll feel compelled to offer advice to people. More often, I’m asked for advice. The one thing that is constant is that people who ask are usually the same people who totally ignore what they are told and continue to fuck up their lives or at the very least, find ways to keep themselves exactly where they are indefinitely. Recent Drama Llama events have caused Nick and me to talk about the Things We Know and our basic method of keeping our lives moving forward and accomplishing our long term goals. Today, I feel like sharing some of our basic rules:
1. Focus Forward. Shit happens, ok? Everyone has a traumatic childhood, everyone has fucked up things happen to them, everyone has issues. The difference between those that move forward and those that don’t is focus. It’s fine to glance back every now and then to check your progress, but you must not spend your life looking backwards. Put your attention and your efforts towards creating the future you want and you’ll get there.
2. Let it GO! This is the second part of the previous rule. If the trauma is old and there’s nothing more you can do about it, let it go. Hanging onto old trauma is nothing but a waste of time. Rather than waste energy gnawing on that tired old bone, why not move on to more positive, productive endeavors? No one can clean your mind of clutter but YOU. Make the decision and LET IT GO. Stop being a victim and take control of yourself.
3. Law of Attraction. This is sort of the culmination of the previous two rules. The Law of Attraction states that you get what you think and talk about. So, if you think and talk about past trauma and indulge in current drama, this is the energy you will attract to yourself. If you think about and talk about your plans as if you have them already, these plans will come to pass. In other words, like draws like. You can read all about the laws of attraction from gurus all over the internet (Deepak Chopra and others), but this is my basic version of it. It works for us.
I’ve seen the law of attraction work over and over in my life and I can promise you that it is real. I decided years ago to let go of childhood crap and just look forward. When I did that, the world opened up to me. I decided to think about what I wanted from life and it has come to pass. I met a wonderful man, I do what I love to do, we work together towards our artistic goals, we have our own home, we have good cars, we have savings in the bank, we have the means to pretty much do as we please (within our economic limits, of course!).
We don’t indulge in wallowing in the past. We don’t indulge in drama. We don’t have Drama Llamas as close friends (Sorry! Can’t waste the energy on Vortices of Chaos!). We look forward and those that can’t look forward with us are left behind. It’s that simple (no matter how much we like you). If we have some sort of issue come up, we take care of it as quickly as possible and move on. We plan for contingencies. We don’t make rash decisions with our money. We do not make large purchases without lots of research. We don’t spend every single dime we make on crap – we have a savings plan and we follow it. If I have a choice of merchandise or a secure future, I will always choose FUTURE. Duh.
It amazes me at how people who are barely getting by can manage to buy expensive crap that is non-essential. It’s like a compulsion to spend every single penny of income every single month. Hmm, maybe it is a compulsion like gambling? Dunno, don’t care, NMP. I still blame the person doing the spending. MAKE BETTER CHOICES.
Basically, I think we live a normal, goal driven life. We have goals and we intend to reach them. I don’t think it’s fooking magic, it’s keeping level heads. It’s thinking ahead not backwards. It’s following our three main rules and keeping our future in focus.
If you constantly think about how hard your life is and how you never have enough money and yet you make sure you spend every penny that comes in, guess what? You are setting yourself up to stay in debt and remain exactly where you are with money: nowhere. If you do the Budget Two Step (one step forward, two steps back), perhaps you should examine your spending habits and your thoughts about money and what it means to your future? Maybe it is you causing your “misfortune”. Take responsibility for your life and how you create it! You are only a victim if you think you are a victim. It’s the same with any part of your life. If you constantly think about the suckage, that is what you draw to you.
I’ve been there and done that. I speak from experience. I choose to look forward and expect the best. Turns out, I’ve gotten it! Yay!
Your thoughts and words have power. As much as your actions. Even if you are in debt up to your eyeballs or in a bad relationship, you can start thinking differently right now, today and start creating the life you want. It all starts with your head.
As the saying goes, “If you want to change your life, change your mind”.
That is one saying that definitely speaks the truth. Nick and I are living proof.
