It’s hard work being the FGM

Especially when two of the group hook up…

I can’t imagine how I ended up the matriarch of this ragtag bunch, but it appears that I have. Weird. As Red Heather so astutely pointed out:

“Nevermind how it happened, but it did, so you need to be more aware of what you say to us. Your words have power and we listen to you.”

Well, geeze, no pressure there, huh?

I’ve been pondering this for a week now. And I still don’t really know what I’m supposed to do.

Gimme a minute, ok?

Writing and stuff

I feel like writing, but I’m having a hard time narrowing down the topics to something a) interesting and b) meaningful. There’s been a lot going on around here of late and it’s hard to write about it in a logical manner.

[…]

As I sit here gazing upon my backyard, I feel both bored and happy at once. There’s the Papa Cardinal having a bite at the big feeder. Mama Cardinal is pecking around below. Chris the Pigeon (or is it Pat?) is grazing below the feeder. The finches are all over the column feeder as well as a couple on the big feeder. A squirrel noshes below the feeder until something catches its attention and it bounds away, up into the privet. Bernadette skulks around the perimeter of the yard looking for a nap spot. It’s all very bucolic, isn’t it?

So why am I getting that trapped feeling? I think we have a great life… But somehow the stability of it all just makes me – dare I say it? – BORED.

I know this is all me. It’s the Universe poking me with a stick (a stick named Hammy, actually) and urging me to grow. Question is, grow how? I know I need to change things such as smoking and drinking too much, not exercising, dealing with my health issues and all that, but I’m so unmotivated it’s really pathetic. I also want a different career, but what do I want?

Bleh. Sometimes navel gazing can only take you so far. Perhaps Hammy the Stick can force me to move.

We shall see.

Another freakin’ retrograde!

Great. We’re in another retrograde – this time it’s Venus. Read about it here and here.

I just finished putting up the Oracle mag and was clicking around reading about the retrograde when I realised an interesting thing. The guy that occasionally writes an astrology column for them actually plagiarised his Venus retrograde column this month! Ha! I had just finished going over my work when I did a Google search for Venus retrograde and ended up at astrologycom.com. As I read the article, I felt dejà vu… Probably because I’d just read the exact same words in the article I put up! I sent the editor an email and she’ll get to the bottom of it, but my bet is that this dumbass guy figured no one else in the world would know how to Google and besides, the real author is in Australia, so that makes it ok, right? LOL

Just damn.

Having a Selfish Parent

I’ve bitched about my mother before and I will again, no doubt, but she never ceases to amaze me with her myopic, self centered, hateful and overall childish attitudes.

She called me yesterday to inform me that my father is finally getting his teeth fixed (they fell out due to his bone disease). Then she proceeds to start belittling him for using sedation to have ALL his teeth removed! When I point out that having multiple extractions is a big deal and most people are sedated, she starts in, “I don’t know what’s wrong with you pussies! I never had sedation! You are all wimps!” Now, keep in mind that she’s never actually had multiple extractions, which in my mind, negates any and all observations that she has on the subject.

Then she starts in on me and my brother, who both detest the dentist due to the simple fact that our parents took us to an Army dentist who didn’t believe in novacaine for such silly things as fillings. Yes, he drilled on young kids (I was 6 or 8, my bro 2 yrs younger) with nothing for pain. I brought this up and pointed out that our dental anxiety was probably due to our parents taking us to this dentist and by the way, what the hell were you thinking?? She immediately hops on her favourite soapbox and defense for all stupid decisions she’s ever made:

Well, I didn’t have any of that crap! If it’s good enough for me, it’s good enough for you!

What that really means is this: My mother treated me like chattel and worshiped my brother. She ignored me and I’ve never gotten over it. I didn’t want kids in the first place, so what better way to get back at everyone than by treating my kids just as shitty as I was treated?

Carnival Rides

After seeing Live Free or Die Hard on Sunday, we went to the little Carnival that was in the mall parking lot. We rode a ride I’ve never seen before, Cobra. Here’s a pic:

Cobra!

I also rode a 60 year old Ferris Wheel – the kind with metal bench seats! Like this one:

Nick managed to ride both the Cobra and the Ferris Wheel without screaming, crying OR puking! Yay! :-)

While I’m at it, I’ll show you some of my faves, although I can’t ride ’em like I used to! The vertigo from the Cobra ride gave me a headache! Here’s the Zipper. And the Scrambler. And the Tilt A Whirl (called the Tilt A Hurl by Nick, tee!!).

I posted about the Skydiver awhile back… Here. And here’s a pic:

Skydiver!!

I’d like to note that the Skydiver as well as the Skywheel and most other rides that I thought were not in use any more actually are in service and going strong. They are strewn about the world, but I found out that there are Skydivers and Skywheels in service with various carnival companies around the US, it’s just a matter of catching the right company at the right time. Last summer I saw a Skydiver as it was being disassembled over at Northlake Mall. I don’t go over there regularly any more and I missed the damn show. Grr. I can’t remember which midway company it was because I didn’t write it down (like a dumbass), but the guy that was there filled me in on these rides. If I had more time to waste (more than the 2 hours I’ve wasted surfing around to all the various midway companies for this post) I’d track it down, but I don’t. I’ve got a headache and I think I’m done with the web for today.

Support your small carnivals! They are keeping alive a tradition that’s been around for 100+ years! Go and ride!
