Movie Night

I love movie nights! Nick and I like to see movies at the theatre, so about once a month we’ll go to our AMC at the Mall for Movie Night. At our AMC theatre, you can pay for one movie and see as many as you can stand, so we usually go for 2 at a time.

This time we saw The Bourne Supremacy and I, Robot. The Bourne sequel was well paced, but it left me feeling like, “Eh, whatever!”. There was not a stick of decent dialog in the whole movie and none of the characters were particularly interesting. On the other hand, Will Smith’s I, Robot was GREAT! It was interesting, the dialog was very good, the characters were fleshed out and the story was very well done. I’d see it again. Will has a shower scene early in the movie and lemme tell ya, that boy is gorgeous!! He has kept much of his Ali physique – for those of you who aren’t familiar, he put on about 30 pounds of muscle for his role in Ali and honey, it’s in ALL the right places. Whew! Jada is a lucky woman! :-)

Also, I’d like to thank Caroline for a fabulous weekend! We had too much fun! In addition, her helpful explanations about the mysteries of ‘hood living were very enlightening. Caroline is somewhat of an authority, since she grew up in the New Orleans ghetto. Thanks, girlie!!

Gotta keep something in here!

I noticed that I only had one entry showing this week, which means that I’ve become lax in my blogging of late. That’s what happens when I’m distracted by one crappy development after another. Bah!

I’m SO GLAD that July is over. It sucked and I was mostly not happy during much of it. Neither was Nick. He even neglected to pay the fucking bills!! Yes, that’s right, we paid about $60 in fees simply because he forgot to click the buttons online to pay them. Talk about an out of whack month! It’s not like we didn’t have the money – which would have been a whole different thing!

So, anyway, stuff going on plus we had to crank out 3 pieces of marketing materials for Rob on the fly last week. We’ve been busy in addition to semi whacked out.

We tried out our rolls for DragonCon on Saturday and they were truly underwhelming. I’ll have to have at least 2 to get anything. ::sigh:: So, now I have to find more. Dammit! We’re exactly a month away and I am getting the preCon jitters already. I always LOVE the last few weeks before the Con. So much going on, so much to do. It’s great.

Which reminds me, I need to adjust my room reservation. Gotta go!

Life, or Something Like It

My life’s been busy lately with friends and some work. In between the bursts of activity, I’ve had the chance to do some thinking.

Last week, we took a tech support job for a guy who is starting up a new ad agency and needed his Mac upgraded to OSX and all his apps upgraded accordingly. Didn’t seem like such a horrible job. Seemed pretty straightforward, actually. But that was not the case. The job turned into a long, drawn-out technical nightmare that has ended up almost losing us money on the deal. In the midst of trying to get the Mac to comply, I discovered that I really, truly am not the least bit interested in doing support any more. It’s boring, it’s hard to predict how long the job will take with OSX (unlike OS9, where I could estimate a job and be within 1/2 hour) and I just plain don’t like it.

Wil, you RAWK!

I just got my very own copy of Just a Geek today!! I bought it the other day on Amazon along with the latest Dark Tower installment: Song of Susannah. I could barely concentrate on Crescent Moon billing with the books sitting on the table behind me!

The moment I got the bills done, I tore into Just a Geek and I’m not disappointed. It occurred to me that I’ve been reading WWdN (Wil Wheaton dot Net) almost since its inception. On the heels of that realisation came another: I’ve been a web geek for 6 years now. Wow! I feel that my web design skills are far from where they should be for someone who’s had a site and built sites for others for as long as I have. I mean, my sites are accessible and compliant, but not especially kewl or cutting edge. Or edgy as Wil would say. ::sigh:: For as much talent that I have at remembering backend web design crap, I’m just not very aesthetically inclined. I HATE Flash. I think it’s ridiculous and worthless. I think ALL sites should be 100% accessible to everyone. Silly me! I actually let accessibility come before design. Well, hell, somebody’s got to!

Anyway, I digress. As I was saying, I have my own copy of Wil’s new book and this again fires my desire to meet him. I wish DragonCon would get him to come. [And they did, eventually. I’ve met him twice, I think. Not as great as one would expect, but he’s cool. -A 2015]

Go now and buy your copy of Just a Geek. It’s a great read!

TN Valley Fair ca. 1983

I think it was 1983, but it could have been ’82. I was dating this guy named Tim, who was my manager at the Quincy’s where I slaved away for minimum wage.

We were an odd couple, as most of my affairs are, with him being very sweet and me being the firecracker that I was back then. This was even before the red hair, remember! I drove my fabulous fuel injected 1979 VW Bug, convertible

and I went to High School and I worked nights at Quincy’s and generally hung out with older people who taught me how to party!

Anyway, Tim and I went to the Tennessee Valley Fair that fall. It was still warm and the fair was as big and fun as ever.

I’ve always loved fairs, carnivals, Six Flags, whatever. I don’t go to them much any more, but I used to go to the Fair every year when I lived in Knoxville. So, in that vein, I drug Tim to the Fair at the huge fairgrounds in East Knoxville.

We go around, playing the rigged games and riding the tamer rides like the Haunted Mansion and the Ferris Wheel and the Tilt a Whirl. They’d already stopped having the hella fun Double Ferris Wheel (that I learned was called the Sky Wheel) but there were still some cool rides that you don’t see any more.

Tim wasn’t the most adventurous type and he really didn’t care for scary rides like the Zipper or the RoundUp or or the various roller coasters. Well, I saw this ride that looked fairly tame, sort of like a ferris wheel, but with little cars for 2 passengers each that could spin on their own while they go around on the big wheel. (I’ve since tracked it down and it’s called the Skydiver. It’s a specialty ride that is not in service any more, but lemme tell ya, IT’S FUN! Here’s a pic and description.) We go up and get into the small car and they lock us in. There are small metal wheels in front of us that look like steering wheels, but are actually SPINNING wheels. Once you got the car to rock, you could yank on these wheels to make the car start to spin on its axis – while you go round and round the Ferris wheel!

When I realized that our disparate weights would make that car spin like a dervish, I started yanking the hell out of the wheel to make it spin more. Tim was good with this until the whole thing started to go round. So, here we are spinning like mad as well as going round. Then it happened: Tim starts to scream like a little girl!! Well, being the evil girl that I am, I began to laugh my ass off and spin the damn thing faster. I was yelling FASTER! at the operator every time we went by and he really cranked it up. That fucker was FLYING! So I was yelling FASTER! and Tim was yelling STOP! STOP! every time we passed the operator!

God I’ve never laughed so hard in my life (while straight, anyway). I was sobbing with laughter as we spun around in our car and whizzed around the Ferris wheel. I was cackling with glee and Tim was bellowing like a lost calf! It was truly a highlight of my youth.

The operator finally had to slow us down and start letting people off the ride and when we had to get off the ride, I thanked the operator profusely as Tim stomped away embarrassed. My face hurt the next day and my throat was sore from all the laughter. Now, that is what I call FUN!

I’d like to publicly thank Tim, who is a really nice guy and after getting calmed down, he was a good sport about my torturing him and I’ve never forgotten the fun of that night.

Thanks, Tim. You were a part of a very good memory. (7.18.23: I just found out that Tim died in Feb this year. RIP Tim!)
