I’ve come to realise that pretty much across the board, young people who are raging liberals really don’t get it. They are completely unwilling and/or unable to see that entitlements and government intervention into private issues really won’t work for the long term. It never has! This is not a new idea! I’ve never been a raging liberal OR conservative, so I really don’t get the reasoning behind it.
I’m a centrist. Every single political test I’ve taken puts me smack in the middle of all the various parties. Which means, of course, I have absolutely no one representing me, ever. I’ve never been all that liberal or conservative. I’ve got liberal ideas such as free college and healthcare but conservative ideas about entitlements and civil rights and drug enforcement. Just want to get that established before I go into my frustration with 20 somethings who worship Obama and blame the problems of the world on Republicans.
I know that being young makes you much more naive and pollyanna about the world, but I sense a really nasty streak in the young liberals today. They will argue that Republicans are the root of all evil while at the same time being perfectly fine with TSA outrages and the loss of our civil rights. Since when did demanding the government stay out of your life and your pants become Republican? Since when is upholding the Constitution a bad thing?
Every single young person I get into a political discussion with will argue that it’s all the Reps fault, but as soon as I remind them that Omama’s circle is FULL of Reps from GeeDubya’s reign, they freak out and end the discussion. EVERY TIME. This is ominous. If partisanship is becoming so deeply ingrained in young people now, how the hell will anything ever get done? When I mention partisanship as being one of the biggest problems we face as a country, this also shuts them down. When did everyone become such weak minded followers that no discussion is even possible?
If you can’t discuss issues FROM BOTH SIDES, then you don’t really understand them, do you? It seems that young people are so focused on entitlements that they can’t see the out of control deficit. All they can say is “cut the military budget!” To which I agree, but it’s more than that. The WHOLE budget needs to be overhauled. That includes entitlements such as welfare, SS and Medicare. And let’s not forget TARP. Fuck TARP. Fuck the banks and fuck the auto industry. And also fuck the stupid amounts of money being handed out for “work projects”.
The federal government’s main roles are upholding the Constitution, currency, infrastructure and defense. NOT being your nanny from cradle to grave. Not telling you what to eat, what to think or anything else to do with your personal affairs. The federal government is not here to give you stuff! It’s here to keep the country going as a whole. Having a deficit bigger than the GNP is bad governance, period. It’s bad for everyone – regardless of party affiliation.
The government is supposed to be run by the citizenry, not the other way around.
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. -Thomas Jefferson
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I fear for this Republic. The citizenry has become dependent and partisan and unable to carry on a discussion long enough to come to compromise. Everyone bitches about the dumbasses in D.C. Well, it seems to me that they perfectly reflect the dumbasses who vote them in.
The 20 somethings flocked to the polls to make sure Saviour Obama was elected. They expected to be saved from the evil Republicans. Well, guess what, dumbasses? Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss. ::shakes head:: Omama has not kept any of his grandiose campaign promises. Nor will he. He can’t! The rest of the political machine is still grinding away just as it always has. A seasoned politician can’t make a difference, what makes you think an amateur will?
Refusing to have a discussion about Omama and his various failures does not make them any less real. Refusing to believe that the deficit is a problem does not change the fact that it is. Climbing up on your high horse of “We’re right because we believe we are!” does not make it so. Go with the FACTS. All else is a waste of time.
Until you can properly discuss your beliefs and defend your position, just STFU, ok? Just shut it. Don’t be on Twitter or FB pontificating about Saint Obama unless you are willing and able to justify your drivel. Magical thinking does NOT make it so. Sorry. Facts are facts and the fact is that Obama is a shitty leader in just about all facets of the Presidency. I’m sorry your saviour has let you down. But the fact is that until ALL the politicians are replaced and ALL lobbying is stopped, nothing will really change. No matter who is in the Oval Office. Go read Thomas Jefferson’s quotes. You’ll see how far astray we’ve gone.
Sorry, kids, it’s a tough life. Magical thinking will not change that. Nor will refusing to discuss politics for fear that you’ll have to acknowledge your magical thinking. This country is chock FULL of sheeple who engage in magical thinking and refuse to take necessary action. And it will be the demise of this Republic.
Now get off my lawn!

I voted for Obama. I think he sucks. I used to always vote Libertarian, and I think I’ll be going back to that.
Last election, I used the method of voting where I simply voted for libertarians where I could, and where I couldn’t, I voted for whomever wasnt currently in office.
“meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” is certainly apt these days.
I think I voted Libertarian since it didn’t matter. I always vote for non incumbents. Throw the bums OUT!!
Idiocracy is a documentary of the future.
I agree with what you are saying..Clean out the house, throw them all out in the trash. Obama did not create the entire mess, but he sure has hell hasn’t made it any better. I fear for all of our futures, young, middle-aged and old.
Sorry to poke at an otherwise brilliant rant… But there’s no such thing as free health care, nor free education. Tax-funded education and tax-funded health care would be enormous entitlements. It ain’t pretty, but it is so. TANSTAAFL.
Pretty much “Amen” to the rest.
Yes, Green, you are correct. I’ve got some cognitive dissonance going on with education and healthcare FOR SURE. I think performance based grants (HOPE, the old PELL) would be a great thing for college education. Grants that actually pay for a decent chunk rather than a pittance. As for healthcare…Well. That one is for another day. :)
