I’ve always wondered what the hell Gimme Shelter‘s lyrics are, so I went on a surfin’ rampage to find them the other day [It’s by the Rolling Stones, you git! If you don’t know that, then you are seriously musically deficient!]. It’s harder than one would think, actually! Nick finally rounded up the lyrics at A-Z Lyrics, which I won’t link to cuz their site is popup laden and really sucky. I couldn’t even find the damn things just now! I ended up finding the lyrics on a random site.
So, once I found the lyrics, then I was wondering who the black girl is that belts out those backup vocals that make the song worth listening to. Well, it’s Merry Clayton who was a Raelette then went on to do tons of stuff in the 60s and 70s. Here is a fabulous article all about her and other backup singers of the day.
