Oogie day

I don’t feel well today. I’m not sure wtf my body is trying to do, but whatever it is, I wish it would get on with it. My back hurts, I’m achy, I’m tired. Bleh.

This is a throw away post just to see if the new Google Ad feed works.

Oh and you can add indigestion to the above list. Yah. It’s great to get old. >:-(

25 Things About Me

I’ve been tagged for this a few times and never done it. Well, here ya go, everyone! Let the crossposts begin! I’ve tried to dig out stuff that I don’t write about much.

1. I am NOT an angry person. I just sound that way. Venting keeps my blood pressure low. :-)
2. I’ll eat anything but insects or entrails (exception: bible tripe in phở).
3. I have a degree in Spanish w/ French minor.
4. I’ve been an optometric technician.
5. I’ve studied to be a herbalist.
6. I’m an avid birdwatcher. 50+ species in my backyard, thankyew.
7. I’ve become an Agnostic over the years. I believe there’s Universal power, but I can’t get much past that. I do like to be in Circle, but I don’t practice Wicca on my own. I think the Law of Attraction works.
8. I briefly toured with a couple of bands as a roadie in the 80s.
9. I have a Music Business AA from the Art Institute.
10. I can drive anything with wheels and gears.
11. I’m a shitty gardener. My yard is Darwinism at its best.
12. I’ve always wanted to be an Artist (capital A) but have NO talent. I am more crafty than artsy. Shuddit, Nick!
13. My family owned several steak houses in the 80s.
14. I make charitable contributions several times a year.
15. I’m not competitive.
16. I’m not jealous.
17. I can’t stand dishonesty, indecision or lack of character. It all leads to DRAMA. No thanks.
18. My hair was strawberry blonde as a child then it became brown. I’ve not seen my natural hair color since 1987. Squeee!
19. I have fired an Uzi. They suck. AKs are MUCH better.
20. I don’t believe in ADD or ADHD. It’s bullshit created by drug companies.
21. I want to learn to speak Chinese (Mandarin).
22. I wanted to be an art restorer but it requires an advanced chemistry degree.
23. I owned a 1979 VW Beetle convertible (baby blue w/ white top) in High School.
24. I have a knack for finding good deals on cars and real estate.
25. I can sew enough to get by. I can’t make complicated stuff, but I do okay at skirts, curtains and repairs.

More on PHXCC aka Wil Con

I found the Flickr pool for the con here. This will give you a good idea of the sort of con it is.

I’m telling you, if you are an anime fan, the west coast is where it’s at.

This con is young and has its issues. Mainly, they have no moderators at the panels, which makes it, um, difficult to get the ones with writers and other non actors going. Actors can hold their own, but nerds: not so much. They also have spotty crowd control and no concept of room management. In some panels, it’s locked down and no one may enter or stand in back – even when people leave. In other panels, the rooms are packed to the ceiling and no one from the con is even around.

The vendors I spoke to all said they’d had a really good con. That is a very good thing and we are feeling encouraged to get our book printed and get out there behind the table. That is SO COOL!

They also had a great original art sale (Nick has a pic of the art on the Flickr feed). My only problem with it was that it was not for charity, but for paying some of the guest fees. I’d be more inclined to buy art that I could write off as a donation. It also strikes me as a bit of bad management that they can’t pay for their guests from the vendor table money… But, nonetheless, they got all the attending artists to donate a sketch or something and the art was very very good. DragonCon should do this.

They plan to merge with the Tucson Con next year (Memorial Day @ Hyatt Convention center in downtown Phoenix) and I hope that they do some research and get a clue. It’s doubtful that they will, knowing how slipshod cons are run in general. But it’ll still be hella fun even if they fuck up the crowd control. This is a medium sized con at best, so their lack of management won’t really start to show for a while – like DragonCon’s lack of management eventually destroyed the con experience here. Hopefully, that will be a long way off!

If anyone would like to join us at this con next year, please shoot me an email. It’d be great to be able to split a room! The plane tix cost us $200 each and the room was about $150/nt FYI. (So if we had four ppl, the room would cost $112.50 ea for 3 night stay.) The 3 day badge is $25. CHEEEP!

We will certainly attend this con next year.
