Back door blues

Heh, ok all you sluts, get your mind outta the gutter! I mean my REAL back door, sillies!

Nick and I had to replace our back door this weekend because the one that was up was literally coming apart at the seams. We took on this task as one that would be kinda hard, but very doable. Hrm… Well, today is day FOUR of the door odyssey and it’ll be a bit more before we’re done. Oh, big shout out to Robert for stopping by Saturday and helping us get started!

It’s not that it’s so frelling hard to hang a door, it’s that the frelling FRAME of the door is so completely out of whack that it’s been hella hard to get the nice square door to fit into a trapezoidal frame. Yah, it’s off in both directions, as in: from side to side and front to back.

We’ve had to chisel out the hinges and replace part of the outside frame just to get the nice new square door to close! The old door had so much water damage that it had warped to fit the frame, hence our incomprehension of just how bad the frame was. We finally got the new door hung properly and it will close properly, but there is still a lot of space that must be filled with weatherstripping. ::sigh::

Anyway, so the door is up and primered, the holes are drilled for the handle and lock and the frame is sealed, filled and partially primered. I’m the wood filler, caulk and paint team, so it’s down to me now.

Aaaah, the pain and suffering of owning a 1951 home. It is a big hassle, but it’s satisfying to do a project and have it look great when you’re done. We are very slow at home improvement, but we do it right. We do not skimp on materials or labour intensive things like filling the damaged wood to make it smooth before painting. We are both perfectionists, too, which adds to our inherent slowness on projects, but damn when we fix something, it’s FIXED.

Well, I’m off to pick up my Moon work and do some more primering on the door. Pix when we’re done!
