I have a myspace account. I detest myspace. But many people think it’s just great and therefore I have an account. This chick I used to know growing up found my myspace and sent me this meme about getting reacquainted and I actually filled it out. Yah, I was bored! LOL
Anyway, one of the questions to me was “What is your fondest memory of me [the girl that sent this]?” A memory as clear as day popped into my head. To her I said “when you sang Heaven on the 7th Floor at Toni’s house”.
Here is the story fleshed out.
It must’ve been summertime, since that’s when we’d have sleepovers the most. There was a small bunch of girls who hung out: me, Toni, Missy and some other girls whom I can’t recall. This particular event was during one of these sleepovers. I looked up the song and it was the year 1977. That would put us in Middle School. There was a lot going on in music at this time; just look at the Wiki for music in 1977! Looking at the list, I remember just about every song from both the US and British charts. Wow.
At this time, everyone had cassette recorders. Cassettes were relatively new and considered very high tech. (Hey, don’t laugh, it was the 70s!!) For some reason, we’d been listening to music and taping ourselves – doing what, I can’t recall. What I do recall is us sitting in Toni’s living room listening to Missy singing along with Heaven on the 7th Floor and laughing hysterically.
I also remember Missy’s long blonde hair. I always thought she had the prettiest hair. Since mine was fine and brown and wouldn’t grow long, of course her locks were fascinating to me.
I can see the structure of Toni’s house: two story with a staircase going upstairs in the middle of the living room. Toni’s room was upstairs, across from the bathroom and she had a door into the attic in her room. It was a medium sized house – a typical 60s era house. We were in the living room where they had a console record player that we listened to Bill Cosby stand up comedy records on.
I remember bits and pieces of many sleepovers at Toni’s house. Her mother, Judy, was a card. Toni’s family was HUGE. They were a real life Brady Bunch. Both her mother and father had kids from previous marriages, 3 each, I think. That’s 6, plus they had 3 together, that’s 9, plus they adopted 2 kids, which totals 11! I think there were actually more than 11, but I just can’t remember for sure. Toni and her 2 siblings were the youngsters of the bunch and the only ones living at home. Toni’s mom, Judy, was into astrology and I remember one time when I was over there, she had her friend cast my chart and told me with glee that I was a double Scorpio, aka SEXPOT! I later found out this was not correct, my rising is actually Sagittarius, but I remember Judy and her friend telling me that and giggling. I always liked Judy and I was very upset when she died suddenly of an aneurysm in 1982 or 83. It’s funny how some people make an impression on you, isn’t it? I think that the encounter with Judy and the astrologer is one of the reasons I pursued astrology and other metaphysical subjects.
I don’t know why this memory and the others popped up, but they are positive ones – which I’ll take any day of the week. :-)
