So, I’ve been in a funk of late. Hence my lack of posts and/or interest in the internet. I’ve skimmed LJ a bit, but I’ve just not been up to interacting much with anyone. Last Thursday, Nick sat me down and said that he wanted me to be happy and he wanted me to do whatever I needed to do to feel better.
So, I decided to start working out with a trainer. I trotted my happy ass over to Sonz in Decatur and plopped down $800+ for 25 one on one sessions with trainer. This place comes highly recommended, so I figured it’d be as good as any other.
Weeeelll, I’m not really so sure about that now. I had my first session with this girl on Friday and it was, shall we say, less than satisfactory. No warm up. Weird exercises. ALL muscle groups. Weights that were too heavy. All lower body then all upper body rather than alternating. It sucked. Not only did it suck, but by using too much weight and her encouraging me to “pop” with weights (WTF?), I’ve spent the last THREE days just getting over it. Apparently these “trainers” haven’t got the slightest idea about basic physiology! You canNOT blow out your muscles so hard that you can’t move the next day! It’s counterproductive! Especially someone who hasn’t lifted weights in about 10 years! WTF? And since when do you try to do both lower and upper body work at the same time? And when did it become normal to want someone to JUMP with weights? And when was it deemed correct to do 5 leg exercises in a row, then 5 arm exercises then do sprints? That is just silly!
Not only that, but there was no weigh in, no measurements, nothing written down, no tracking of any sort. Well, damn, if I have to do all that myself, as well as put together my own frelling workouts, then what the blue fuck am I paying them for? I just don’t get it. Am I missing something here?
Tomorrow I go in at 9:30am, but I shall go early so I can have a conversation with this girl that’s supposed to be a “trainer”. She’s nice and all, but if all I can expect from her is to hand me weights (of the wrong size) and count, then we’ve got a problem. I’m going to ask that they convert my $800 into a standard membership or something. Just damn, can’t anything be easy?
In addition, the spot of poison ivy I had has resprouted and spread and I have a weird red dotty rash.
::sigh:: I’m having a truly sucky few weeks.

Wow. What the hell are you thinking? Gyms are for certain types of people and I don’t think you are one of them, are you? Do I have that right or am I way way off base? No offense but I think you would be better off with a daily walk/jog and a set of dumbbells to use while you are watching something mindless on TV. Your diets good, right? What are your goals, anyway? The only time I could do the gym thing is when I was getting school credit or in Jamaica probably because I was still pleasantly drunk from last night and the view was to die for. Being in the right frame of mind is everything. People in gyms seem plastic-y unless it’s a real gym then people are there for some sort of physical goal, doing an ironman anytime soon? Me neither.
Here is what I do and is why I’m sooooooo f-ing sexy! Well ok, it is what I use to do, 45 minute walk early in the morning (with tunes), reasonable calorie intake (had to keep a diary to get it right) and lift dumbbells for 20 minutes every other day. Weigh came off about 1/3 pound a day but better then that I felt better, pieces-parts worked better, and was beginning to tone up. Stopped it all because I got worried about being mugged. Only things on the road at 5:00am is me, paper guy, stupid birds singing under street lights and trouble. When I get back from China I’m getting my carry permit and starting it up again. The nice thing is that I stopped about 2 month ago and only put on 5 pounds so I’m still down by 15.
I’m sorry this came out so negative, not even sure I should post it. I know you are trying to get out of the blue funk and improving the physical will help the mental. In addition is it possible to take a little vacation for a change in scenery, sometimes things are easier to focus on from a distance. Maybe take a class in something you normally wouldn’t, maybe try some scca events. Something that will immerse you in a different world, doesn’t really matter if you love it or not, just something different to shake up the same-old, same old. I wish you good karma and health, what else do you need? :^P
Tried calling, number no worky.
Yur favorite tard,
MBB
Aw, thanks, hon! :-)
Taking the plunge with the trainer is more of a psychological ploy than the actual need for someone to guide me. Now that I’ve made the $800 commitment, you can be sure I’ll drag my ass in 4x/wk.
And YES you are 100% correct about the need for a vacation! Too bad it’s too close to DragonCon now for that.
Now I’m gonna write you an email about the China thing…
