Myrtle Beach, post Con

Deciding to take a real vacation after the Con was the best idea ever! The Con is a ‘vacation’ of sorts, but it’s a stressful, balls-to-the-wall kind of vacation. Going to the beach after the stress of the Con, especially this year’s con, was awesome.

I’d not been to Myrtle Beach since 1984, but when I read about the Pavilion being torn down for condos, I really wanted to go see it one last time. Nick had never been to Myrtle Beach at all, so off we go. If you want a CHEAP beach trip, go to Myrtle Beach! A beachfront room was $60! Now, granted, I will only stay in oddball old 1960s era Motels, so I can’t tell you what the Best Western charges! We stayed in the Diplomat Motel on Wed and then the Emerald Shore Motel for Th and Fri.

DragonCon 2006

It all started as a typical DragonCon. We went down and picked up our badges on Thursday night then proceeded to the bar to mingle and wait for Andy.

We met a guy from FEMA who had been deployed to Atlanta in case the hurricane (Ernesto?) became a big deal. We also met a guy named Mark who was puffing a pipe on the bar’s Cigar Porch and Nick began chatting with him about pipes – which is Nick’s new hobby. As it turns out, Mark is also an artist who put together an Art Crawl to promote the smaller artists at the con who did not get into the Art Show. Andy finally showed up around 11:30pm and joined us on the Cigar Porch where we stayed for about an hour more. We had to leave since our check-in was Fri, but we also decided that next year we’ll check-in on Thu so as not to miss the first night fun.

9/11 anniversary thoughts

As today has slid by, my thoughts have been occupied with getting back in the swing after vacation, checking on our accounts, catching up with friends, etc. I’ve not thought much about 9/11 since I read the paper this morning. I guess the reason is that nothing has really changed in this country. Foreign policies are still frelled. Duhbya is still in power. Terrorism still rages. Did 9/11 make an impact on the US? Yes for the short term, of course it did, but the long term? Certainly seems not to have changed a thing other than giving the conservative Christians a reason to decide that it’s a good time to make our own Christian Taliban and push the US closer to theocracy.

::sigh::

May the victims all rest in peace and may the terrorists get ALL they deserve.
