We got lucky with the storm!

Today we had planned to stay in, so we did. The roads were clear by noon and much of the snow is gone but we stayed in anyway. It’s been nice and quiet.

I’ve been doing a bird count (yesterday and today) and futzing around the interwebs and reading tweets from our West Coast buddies. (Apparently WonderCon was a good show this year.) Nick is drawing a week’s worth of Weasels. Heh. Say it again: weeks worth of Weasels! That is fun to say! :-)

After reading about the storm, I feel lucky we got so little. Dave, how’d you guys end up? My friends in Charleston got 6″ of snow!! Poor Caroline had to drive back from NOLA in that shit!! ARGH!! I am very grateful we ended up nixing the trip to Ktown otherwise we’d have been driving in that mess, too. Yuck!

It was a weird weekend, but overall, a good one for us. Tomorrow: back to the grind!

SNOW DAY!! updated

Wow, we got surprised, didn’t we?

We are here with Emily and Astrid – Astrid lives in Smyrna and she’s not going anywhere, so we’re just gonna have a partay!! We’re good for food and smokes, but they are almost out of their smokes, so there is much gnashing of teeth going on. Emily keeps wanting to go out and I’m like, NO!

The roads are completely FUBAR and will only get worse as the temps drop, so they just better ration the smokes cuz we’re not getting out today or tomorrow. [update: Nick ended up going out around 3pm, as this video shows and the main roads were fair.]

Nick has pix and video of the snow storm, which we will upload soon!

No go out, play in the snow and plan to be IN for the next coupla days. W00t!

[Update: it’s the day after and the roads were clear by noon. So, although there’s still some ice on the ground, the snow is done and we are very lucky to have missed the worst of it!]

Cranky Pants: ON

This godsdamned monsoon has turned my yard and my basement into a fucking lake. As everyone knows, shit rolls downhill and my house is on a steep hill. Fortunately, I only get 2 houses’ worth of river rather than the deluge the houses farther down the street get. The leakage we thought we’d fixed in the basement is not fixed, so the sump pump is running almost contiuously – which is irritating when it’s right beneath my feet when I’m at my desk.

I’m surprised the fucking DSL is working. It’d be my luck to have it down when I have web work to do. It’s not giving me full speed, though, because I’ve been trying to upload a video to YouTube for about half an hour and it’s still grinding. Eh, fuck it. You can see the video of the sharpshinned hawk some other time.

I woke up at 6 fucking 30 this morning and never got back to sleep. It’s 9:30 and I’m ready for a nap. Between the cats and the sump pump going on and off every 26 seconds (yah, I counted) it was useless. Then at 8:30 it sounded like it was stuck on, so I had to haul my ass out into the pouring rain to check it out. It was fine, naturally. Had I not checked it would have stayed on and burned out. There are reasons why I handled it myself…

Of course it’s hard to get to the pump with all the SHIT that’s piled up in the basement (being ruined by the water). As soon as the weather breaks, it’s going to be cleaned out. Everything that is non essential is getting tossed/freecycled. I’m done with having every square inch of this house jammed with CRAP that someone refuses to get rid of because “we might need it”.  Same goes for the attic. Heads up, packrat: you’d best mark what is essential, because I’m getting rid of everything up there.

Another reason I’m pissy today is because I went to bed mad, which I know better than to do.

So, this is me with my Cranky Pants fully ON. I will not be attending Taylor’s birthay dinner tonite due to said Pants. It’s best I just stay in and do my geek work. I truly am FOUL today.

However,  the sound of the Weasel getting cold water sprayed on him from the shower that was left on is music to my ears. He did it to me yesterday and payback is shweet. I feel a little better.

Profits? Profits, anyone?

UPDATE: And ticket prices have spiked this year as well: $100 for walkup tickets. Keep in mind, the biggest Con in the US, Comic-Con, has tickets for $75. And it’s 10x better. Heh, yah, no money grabbing here…

After all the shit I’ve taken from DragonCon “volunteers” over the years, the lawsuit coming from Ed Kramer for HIS PROPER CUT OF THE PROFITS from that Con is very validating.

Kramer wants his share and he asserts that DragonCon has been underreporting its attendance numbers for years to avoid the Fire Marshal and to avoid having to pay him (Kramer) what his shares are actually worth. Well, that explains the Con’s refusal to admit to how many people attend, now, doesn’t it?

“Pat Henry initiated an aggressive, coercive, and nepotistic campaign,” the suit states, “to wrest control of the company away from its shareholders.” – Ed Kramer quote from AJC article

Henry says, “[…] he [Kramer] no longer has control over management decisions. That loss of control may be what motivated him to bring these baseless allegations.

“DragonCon has enjoyed great success since Mr. Kramer left, and we do not think a court will second guess the way that current management has run it.” from AJC 2/27/09

Oh, this Convention is not about money – nooooooo. Why pay anyone when you have a multimillion dollar business run by FREE labour? Why pay shareholders their fair share if you can KEEP IT? ::cackle::

I’ve been yelled at, stalked on LJ, called a cunt and generally maligned by DragonCon volunteers for my assertions that DragonCon is a FOR PROFIT convention and therefore should not use a 100% volunteer workforce. It should use the PROFITS from its convention to have a real staff that runs the thing properly.

Comic-Con International IS non-profit (notice the mission statement at the bottom) and pays a huge staff to run its three successful, smoothly efficient conventions, so, what does that say about Henry? He wants the Benjamins, DUH. The man is greedy, not stupid. I wish I had a multimillion dollar privately held business with no labour costs, no admin costs, no infrastructure costs (NO, big binders are NOT infrastructure!), no con staff costs, etc. Yes, it takes money to run the Con, but that’s what the dealer room should be paying for. Bad management aside, I still think there is plenty of cash coming in from this convention and Henry has no problem taking HIS share. Since no one is allowed to see the books (unlike a non-profit), we can only speculate about how much money is being “paid” to Henry. In any case,

the cultlike belief that DragonCon is NOT for profit can now DIE.

So, Con Slaves: Suck it long, suck it hard!

NOTE: we found out several years ago that Pat Henry bought a MOUNTAIN. A WHOLE MOUNTAIN with all the money he rakes in from DragonCon. Sickening. -A Feb 2016

You were wrong about this Convention and I was right all along. I shall be smug now.  ::giggle::

I decided to leave comments open in case there is more info about the lawsuit, not for the inevitable deluge of LJ Con Slaves telling me how much I suck and what a cunt I am.  I’ll delete all of the “OMG U R such a cunt! DragonCon is PERFECT!” comments. They are obviously irrelevant and I don’t want them clogging up my blog. Unless you have documented proof of something I’ve missed or other relevant info to the lawsuit, don’t bother. I get to be smug in exchange for all the shit I’ve taken over the years. Deal with it.

Sharpshinned Hawk

You all know I’m a birdwatcher and I particularly love visits from my neighborhood raptors. Today I had the privilege to observe a male (I think) Sharpshinned Hawk devour a robin that it caught in the yard. I think this is the same hawk that we got pix of a few months ago when he was a juvenile. Hawks are very difficult to identify because they look completely different from juvenile to adult and several species look very similar, such as the Sharpshinned and the Cooper’s hawks. The sexes look the same but the females are typically bigger than the males. In the Sharpie’s case, the females are about twice the size of the males, which is why I believe this one is a male. It wasn’t much bigger than a crow.

He is eating a Robin. These shots were all taken at full zoom (40x), which shows how awesome this Canon really is.
