Bad news, good news

First the bad news:

Yet another indicator that this country is going to hell in a handbasket:
Supreme Court rules in favour of personal property seizures.

WTF? How in the hell could anyone think this is a good idea, especially the so-called liberals of the Supreme Court?? This is madness, total, complete madness. So, it’s now OK for a PRIVATE developer to waltz into a neighborhood and decide that it’d be best to seize private homes in order to build Mcmansions or a strip mall in the name of the “public good”?

I worry about the morons who are running this country. Isn’t there some way we could get rid of the WHOLE government and just start over? Couldn’t we give them all notice that we’re replacing them and then just do it? Starting with The Shrub, of course, then proceed with the rest of the executive branch, then the legislative branch, then the judicial branch. Let’s take a year and simply replace every last one of the idiotic, misguided, outdated old people who run this place and put in some new blood. Smart business people, diplomats, exemplary judges, independent legislators and others who have the desire to serve the rest of us. No parties, no lobbies, no bullshit special interests and no huge salaries, either.

Save your comments, I know this could never ever happen. Just let me have my fantasies, ok?

Now, the good news:

Our favourite L5P bar, The Vortex, has decided to become a BAR and allow smoking! There is an article in today’s AJC [article looong gone -ed.] about the new statewide smoking ban that is happening July 1st and The Vortex is mentioned for its avant garde policy of allowing ONLY 21 and up.

I’m ecstatic that The Vortex has stood up to the pressures of the government and the breeders and made a stand for those of us who don’t want brats in our neighborhood hang outs. Of course the breeders are whining about not being able to take their packs of sniveling brats into the Vortex to eat, but I’m so happy I could just KISS everyone at the Vortex. Those guys totally RAWK. I can’t wait to eat there on Monday and tell everyone how much I love them! I also can’t wait to fire up a smoke and savour the knowledge that there are people who truly will live as they please.

3 cheers for Michael Benoit, owner of the Vortex, for standing up to whiny breeders and government tyranny!!

If you aren’t incensed

…then you are NOT paying attention. Wil Wheaton has written a wonderfully well rounded article about the REAL ID card that is being quietly pushed thru the legislative process, unbeknownst to the sheeple who mill around this country.

Why is it still OK for the fascists who run this country to slip all sorts of legislation through on the back of legitimate bills? WHY? I think it’s ludicrous to allow such deception, yet it happens every single day in Washington DC.

Where is OUR say? I’ll tell you where: locked up in the confines of a government of rich white men who reelect themselves to office because the sheeple of this country can’t be bothered to keep up with what’s going on, much less VOTE. If you don’t vote, you give away everything this country stands for, period. You give up your privacy for REAL IDs, your civil liberties for the PATRIOT ACT, your money for more and more taxation, your quality of life for the rampant pollution spewed by rich corporations who pay the legislature for the right to do as they please (ever heard of lobbyists?).

I worry for this country. I hope that my generation will get off their collective ass and DO something to stop this country from falling into the abyss of theocracy and corporate control. I vote and I write my reps and senators. Do YOU? It’s not much, but if everyone would do it, perhaps we’d get some change.

This is the problem!

You can’t legislate morality, people. NO. You can’t. I can’t believe the moronic divorce law changes that are sliding right on through the GA legislature with nary a raised eyebrow. WTF?

When did this country slide completely off the track like this? Who are the people pushing for this Nazi agenda that wants to legislate every tiny aspect of everyone’s lives? It’s ridiculous!!

Is it the Boomers? Is it sinister sleeper cells left over from the Pinko commie days that have finally crept all the way to Washington? Is it rabid Southern rednecks who think it should be their way or the highway? Who?

I want to round up the culprits and toss them out of this country. OUT!! It would probably be a good idea to toss them all the way out of the gene pool while we’re at it, but I think it’d be easier to just toss them into the Middle East so they can LIVE in a theocracy and see what they are trying to do to this country.

You can’t tell a woman what to do with her OWN body. You can’t tell a couple that they cannot divorce if they damn well feel like it. You can’t stop people from doing whatever the hell they want to in their bedrooms. You can’t tell people that they can’t smoke. You can’t offer civil unions to only one set of people.

You just can’t!!! It’s NOT the government’s job to regulate morality! When did the idea that it was come into vogue?

This country was founded to get away from oppression and restrictions on free speech! It was founded on separation of church and state! This is NOT a theocracy!!

Goddammit, why doesn’t anyone seem to understand this? Why doesn’t anyone seem to give a rat’s ass if our liberties are eroded and our lives legislated?

It’s not just the South, it’s this whole country, I know. I am flummoxed by this odd attitude from people who used to value freedom. Hell, this country was the poster child for freedom. What happened?

This is the insidious problem that lurks in our government. The desire to impose more and more and more rules about how you should live your life. It’s disturbing.

Just damn.

New Cabinet for the Shrub

The Shrub’s cabinet is bailing right and left! Hee!! It makes me happy. [edit 11/16: well, now I’m not sure I’m happy. It could get even worse with Condi Rice in there… not to mention the Shrub installing all his Texas cronies… I think I’ll amend happy to read INTERESTED. – A]

The guy who replaced Attorney General Ashcroft, Alberto Gonzales, has already pissed off the Religious Right by being a moderate when it comes to abortion. Yay! But who knows what other things he’ll fuck up, being a Bush cronie and all.

In addition to Ashcroft, the other bailees so far are Secretary of State Colin Powell, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, Education Secretary Rod Paige and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham. I don’t know what to think about all these folks being kicked out and/or leaving. If the Shrub gets rid of the Nazis and installs more moderate people, then it could be a good thing. If he just makes things worse by installing more of his Texas cronies like Gonzales then maybe it’s not such a good thing. [another edit 11/16: Condi Rice is never a good thing. Like, EVER. -A]

What do y’all think?

What a surprise!

The Christian right has taken over the country! I knew the Shrub was going to win the election, but the overwhelming attack from the far right is VERY disturbing. I just read an op/ed piece about how this election wasn’t about parties or issues at all, it was about MORALS – a very astute observation.

The candidates didn’t really talk about the issues facing the country: deficit, jobs, a lost cause “war”, civil rights, the environment. No, this election was all about whose morality is the right one for this country. And the Christians have spoken!

This election was all about what kind of America we want and how we’re gonna legislate behaviour to ensure that the right wing Christian ideal is enforced. Is that really the America we want? What happened to the American ideal of freedom of expression? Or equal rights for EVERYONE no matter his sexual preference or religious beliefs? Or the separation of church and state? Or the triumph of science without religious restrictions?

And let’s not forget the Supreme Court, that will be changed for our lifetimes by Bush and the Conservative Christians he represents. It’s guaranteed that Chief Justice Rehnquist will be replaced, with a possibility of two more justices during Bush’s term. This is truly frightening. This could change our rights in ways that I don’t even want to think about. How about overturning Roe v Wade? How about letting the 10 Commandments be used in the judicial system? Google search about the role of the Chief Justice and the scenarios that could be played out under the Bush regime. You won’t like it.
