Calm before the storm

I’m sitting here twiddling my thumbs this week with shit tons of stuff to do and none of it ready. I’m waiting on comics. I’m waiting on the magazine. I’m waiting on the payroll company.

Damn. I know exactly how this is gonna play out: Monday I’ll have a whole freaking magazine to do, a payroll system to set up AND input the payroll as well as pack our shit for the Con. FUCK.

This sucks.  And it’s really stressing me out. Big time.

Con Mode

Today, my taqueria work got my last nerve, so I got into Con Mode instead. I found a good little hotel in Walnut Creek that is about the same cost as a Motel 6, but NOT a Motel 6. Now, I’m trying to get the family corralled at the same hotel for ease of commuting around to the various events that are going on while we are visiting East Bay San Francisco.

We’re currently working on the sampler and other projects that need to be wrapped up ASAP. We intend to ship out the big box with samplers and stuff by Wednesday. Ha! No pressure!

So, off I go to work on con things. :-)

Rainy rain

The rain held off for Russ and Janel yesterday and it’s rained all day today. It’s been nice. We’ve been quietly working or napping. Not much online activity what with ATT DSL dropping in and out continuously. At one point it was raining hard and the DSL was out as well as the satellite dish. I’m looking into cable for everything. I’m really tired of this bullshit. Our DirecTV DVR+TiV0 is dying anyway, so it’d be a good time to switch. The phone is the hard part about that – either it works great or Comcast screws you and you have NOTHING: no phone, no internet, no TV. All eggs in one basket is never a good thing, but hell, I’ve got no advantage now. Well, the phone worked, I guess that’s a small advantage.

It’s the last week before Comic-Con. I’m getting excited about it now. The plane fares are booked, the Con hotel is booked and I’ve got Amtrak figured out, we just have to decide how many layovers we want. I’ve also got to book a hotel in San Francisco (East Bay, specifically), once we hear where the rest of the family is staying.

Bernie’s on my mind. I can’t help it, it’s like a loose tooth. I just hope wherever she is, she’s not in pain. ::sigh:: I’m so very sad.

Mustn’t dwell. I think I’ll do some boring paperwork.

Bernadette we’ll miss you ALWAYS

Well, it’s been 17 days. I guess we’ve got 2 cats now. I’m not one to give up easily, but what else can I do? Either she’s dead or she’s lost. I can’t help either way. It sucks sucks sucks.

For a small cat, she ate a lot. I’ve noticed a big reduction in kibble consumption. I always said she had a worm. I miss my lil grey striped huntress. When I told Andy about all this, he reminded me that she used to follow Hobbes around when she was a baby lurking in our yard at Derrydown. It took us weeks to get her tame enough to come into the house and be petted.

She got her name from a cartoon, naturally. There is a small grey stray cat in Animaniacs called Rita who was always singing. We didn’t want to call her Rita because Andy’s family had several pets named Rita, so we decided to use the voice of Rita, Bernadette Peters. So, our tiny little cat got a very big name.

Bernadette never did give up her claim to being feral, right up to the last time I saw her – having dinner on the back porch. She would hesitate before coming into the house every time. It took a minimum of two tries for her to enter. If there was anything amiss, forget it. When she was outdoors, we couldn’t get near her. She’d run away like she’d never seen us before. I’m sure it was a game, but at least part of it was her feral roots. She’d have her dinner al fresco much of the time if the weather was good. Despite all this, she’d still come inside most nights and cuddle up on the couch and purr purr purr. What a sweet little cat!

This ended up being Bernie’s eulogy. And I am so very sad for that.

Thanks to everyone for all the support.

A bit better

Nick broke into our neighbors’ basement last night to see if Bernie was in there. The lights are on under there, but they’ve been gone for over a week so we couldn’t have them check. He just couldn’t stand it any more. Sadly, when he got in there he saw that there is an easy escape route that Bernie could use so the whole endeavor was for naught. Dammit. So now we’ve got to replace the latch and lock for them and hope they don’t hate us for going in there. I don’t think they will, they are very nice people. I wish that cat would come home.
I had a little retail therapy yesterday which helped with my doldrums. I went to Ross for a gift and found a wonderful surprise gift for a friend as well as two new frocks for myself. I’m fat as hell, but I still need stuff to wear.

I’m still not really in the mood for chitchat, but at least I’m not freaking out.

My new green Nano came in yesterday. Nick got it for $100 – about $50 less than usual – due to the auction ending on July 4th. It’s not in perfect condition, there are scratches on the back and on the screen as well. But hey, I got 8Gb of space for tunes as well all the album art. Yay! The newer Nanos are all video, so I can do pix, tunes and video of any kind. Nice. I put everything I wanted from our library on it last night and it’s half full. Now it’s time to go on a ripping binge! I’ve got a shelf full of CDs that I’ve not ripped, so I think I’ll dig into my old stuff.

So, that’s the state of me right now. Doing better, still don’t feel like chatting. Maybe tomorrow…
