What a surprise!

The Christian right has taken over the country! I knew the Shrub was going to win the election, but the overwhelming attack from the far right is VERY disturbing. I just read an op/ed piece about how this election wasn’t about parties or issues at all, it was about MORALS – a very astute observation.

The candidates didn’t really talk about the issues facing the country: deficit, jobs, a lost cause “war”, civil rights, the environment. No, this election was all about whose morality is the right one for this country. And the Christians have spoken!

This election was all about what kind of America we want and how we’re gonna legislate behaviour to ensure that the right wing Christian ideal is enforced. Is that really the America we want? What happened to the American ideal of freedom of expression? Or equal rights for EVERYONE no matter his sexual preference or religious beliefs? Or the separation of church and state? Or the triumph of science without religious restrictions?

And let’s not forget the Supreme Court, that will be changed for our lifetimes by Bush and the Conservative Christians he represents. It’s guaranteed that Chief Justice Rehnquist will be replaced, with a possibility of two more justices during Bush’s term. This is truly frightening. This could change our rights in ways that I don’t even want to think about. How about overturning Roe v Wade? How about letting the 10 Commandments be used in the judicial system? Google search about the role of the Chief Justice and the scenarios that could be played out under the Bush regime. You won’t like it.

Stupid Traffic Tricks

Last night, I witnessed the dumbest driver that I’ve EVER seen. I live in Atlanta, so I’ve seen many morons on the road!

I was taking a friend home to Oakhurst via E College Ave. This requires a left hand turn onto McDonough right after Agnes Scott College. There is no turn signal at this light. Traffic was still heavy at 7:15pm or so, which means that in order for anyone to turn left, the first car must pull up into the intersection on green in order to make the turn on yellow. It’s standard practice to do this in order to keep any sort of traffic flow. Otherwise, no one will get through the intersection, like, EVER, as the case in point will illustrate.

We pulled up just as the light was going from green to red and one car got through. The stupid woman in front of us was first in line. The light got around to green again and she didn’t move an inch into the intersection, so I figured she planned to gun it on yellow and squeak through as is the practice here. Well, NO. She sat there. (We’re on light no. 2 for those keeping track.) The light goes through another cycle and comes back to green (#3). She still sits. Now there are 4 or 5 cars behind me patiently waiting, but I’m now yelling out the window for her to MOVE INTO THE INTERSECTION. She moves up about 2 feet, then stops again and lets the light go red. Now she’s too far into the intersection.

Nov 2nd Looms

And there is not a decent choice to be had. What to do, what to do?

I’m SO OVER this election I could just puke! Everyone knows I hate the Shrub (as Caroline so aptly calls him) and I think Kerry is just as out of touch – only in different areas. The Shrub called it “the internetS”, yes, with an S. What a fucking moron. Kerry hasn’t attempted any talk about such newfangled things as the internet, most likely because he is just as clueless as W.

I’m loathe to vote 3rd party because the race is so close. Not that it will matter anyway, thanks to the Electoral College who will vote Republican for this state no matter what the hell I vote. It’s SO demoralizing. Oh, and GA got two MORE EC votes this year, too, WHOOPEE.

The ever elusive mirliton

Ok, after much discussion and a trip to the Farmers Market, I found out that what they had labeled as “merliton” at one point, was actually another mexican squash that looks like a pale fat zucchini, not a chayote squash.

I’d never seen the squashes that Russ used in his casserole, only tasted them, so when I went to the market I bought what was labeled “merliton” but was actually just a plain Mexican squash (it tasted very similar). Hence my confusion. When we went to the Farmers Market with Russ and everybody on Sunday, I showed Russ what I had been using and he said that was NOT mirlitons then Caroline piped up and said that mirlitons were bumpy – that’s why they called them “gator eggs”. So, today I did the search to find out what the Louisiana folks were talking about.

I’ve seen the bumpy squashes many times at the Market, but didn’t know what they were until I did the Google search today. So, you know I’m off to get some and make my recipe again to see if I can tell the difference! [NOTE: Chayote squash IS a “mirliton”. This post is not clear about that!]

Beer Fest weekend

So another Decatur Beer Festival was much fun and much beer! This year we had a posse of our own: Caroline and Andrew volunteered and Russ and Heather paid to get in. We were Captains again, wrangling volunteers and facilitating the Fest in general. The Festival didn’t sell out this year, sadly. I think it was backlash from last year’s early sellout and a UGA game. In any case, it was great fun! Man, were we tired!

But despite our exhaustion, we made it to Bobbie’s 30th birthday party at Thinking Man Tavern. It was a surprise party and it was great to see everyone.

What else? I need to get more creative work. I’m sick of the clients I have (nothing personal, just bored) and I want to make some money before Christmas. Hmmm, that reminds me to troll the Mall for some p/t Christmas work. Well, it’s Nick’s monday off, and we’ve got to get our day started!
