ACE + Art Shows

I just posted a very amusing story over on LJ that those on my friends list should definitely check out – you’ll laugh, I promise! I can’t talk about it here due to the public nature of this blog, but it’s private on LJ, which is why it’s there.

Anyway, this weekend was really fun and very tiring! We attended the first (reincarnated) ACE con downtown at the Hyatt. We got there late Saturday due to my insomnia issues, but it was OK since the Dealers Room was the biggest attraction for us anyway. The con was just fair, but for $15 bucks, it was well worth it. We see a lot of potential if Pat Henry and the DragonCon empire doesn’t fuck it up. The big star they got was Rosario Dawson of Sin City fame. She’s now collaborating on OCT, a comic being published by 12 Gauge.

We head out to Decatur for the Art House umbrella show. The Art House space is very small and the Umbrella Show was only about a dozen items, so we were only there for about half an hour. We continued on to Doo Gallery for the Sci Fi a Go-Go show by Blast Off Burlesque.

I’d never seen a burlesque show, believe it or not. Of course I knew the concept and all that, but I had NO IDEA they were so much fun! The art at the show was very cool and offbeat. There was a piece that we called Squirrelly Wrath – a multimedia piece made of wood, photos, beads, glass and what looked to be paper maiché sculpture. It was squirrel themed, of course. Our lovely Kate had a piece up as did Thom. I was so exhausted from the damn insomnia of Friday night that I practically dragged myself to this show but it was well worth the $10 admission! Hey, how can you go wrong with all the PBR and Poontang you can drink?? (Poontang is vodka and Tang, btw)

The burlesque show started around 11pm. It started off kinda slow and I wasn’t really into it, but after a few minutes they started to hit their stride and it was AWESOME! They did funny little skits – all of a Sci Fi theme, natch – with plenty of stripping and sexual innuendo to keep you interested. One skit was Princess Leia doing a hula hoop routine to the Star Wars theme! It was GREAT! There was an Invisible Man stripper routine that was brilliant right down to the g-string. There was a lovely round butt redhead who did a strip to Just a Gigolo/I ain’t got Nobody with the joke being that she stripped down to a bodysuit that was painted to look like muscle and bone. No Body. Get it? There was a also a lesbian who totally looked like a boy who did a strip that ended with her in a Star Trek uniform then a wife beater with Live Long which she tore off to reveal silver pasties with And Prosper on her stomach. LOL!

The show went on for two hours with a 10 minute break and I was totally screaming for the whole 2 hours. I tell ya, you can’t beat that for 10 bucks! This burlesque troop does the Silver Scream Spook Show every month and we intend to become regulars!

As in the other post, any of you locals who’d like to join us for our outings, just give us a shout. We’d love to introduce you to our newfound love of being entertained by real people! It totally rawks! :-)
