Speaking of Fair Treatment…

Just re-read this post from last year’s DragonCon shenanigans and I thought I’d post a short follow up to that.

We did not attend DragonCon at all this year. While there was lots of FOMO and pouting (on my part), overall, I don’t feel we missed much. What did happen was that our biz partner, who works with the bar that wanted us to do the whole con FOR FREE, actually got PAID. Yup, so while we were vilified for bowing up and not wanting to do a con for free, they ponied up real money for our biz partner to do the con. SO I GUESS WE WERE ON THE RIGHT TRACK, EH? I fucking hate that con and the people who treated us like shit, THEN turned around and did as we asked in the first place.

Which is the lead in to the fair treatment post from last year. Turns out that fair treatment is actually possible from the very bunch of folks to said it was “impossible” a year ago. Goes to show that you should not give in when you know things can be better. I’ve got a history of stirring the pot, and I’m glad that this time someone I know gets to benefit. We are VERY happy that our biz partner got the gig, got paid and got another gig out of it. He deserves it!!

Fair treatment is not an option. Our pub will be a harassment free zone on both sides of the bar. Our employees will have a colour coded system to subtly notify management if they are being harassed by a customer. Customers who harass my employees, use hate speech or abuse our games will be asked to leave. Simple. We are actually going to post the Rules of the House on the front of the menu (a là Vortex), so there is no confusion about what we expect.

Here are the Rules of the House you’ll see on the menu:
1. We have a zero tolerance policy for harassment towards our employees. If any of our employees feels harassed, you will be asked to leave. We reserve the right to eject anyone for bad behaviour.
2. We also have zero tolerance for hate speech of any kind, which includes offensive clothing. You will be asked to take off the hat or turn the shirt inside out. Or you can leave.
3. We will not tolerate abuse of our games. These games are expensive and we’ve spent hundreds of hours refurbing them. If you beat on the games, you will be asked to leave.
4. We are a no kid zone after 7pm. We are a pub, after all, and we want to allow adults time to play without children around. Teenagers are OK. We are open during the day Saturday and Sunday, so we feel there’s plenty of time for kids. We’ll also have restrictions on special events such as Drink n Draw, etc. We hope you understand that we’re trying to be fair to all.

I think that upholding our core beliefs is essential to creating a great work environment. We’ve even gone so far as to not have certain shooter games (Police Trainer, for one) that involve shooting people. We feel that this type of game is inappropriate with the current atmosphere of police shooting people in the face and rampant mass shootings. We have shooter games, but they are alien and/or carnival based ONLY.

We think that being aware and treating people fairly is just the way to run our business. We hope that people appreciate our efforts to start this pub up with the right attitude from the get-go.

We can’t wait to serve you!

Life in the ‘Burbs 4 Year Update!

Can’t believe it’s been four years already! Wow! So many changes!

We’ve acclimated to life surrounded by old white T***p supporters and hillbillies. They keep to themselves for the most part. After much bitching and passive aggressive note leaving, the assholes behind us have ceased having their goddam lawn service come at 7am on Sundays and the next door neighbors don’t let their yappy dogs out at the crack of dawn. Victory!

The drive to Decatur and other civilised parts of Dekalb has become normal. We actually do a lot of our main shopping and entertainment in Duluth. Costco, Jusgo Chinese market, Big Lots, Studio Movie Grill and Ollie’s are all clustered on Venture Drive, so we go there for gas, movies and shopping. Even though it’s more of a drive, everything is together so it’s convenient to make one trip rather than several to Decatur.

I had the VSG surgery in 2016. Life changer, that. SO GLAD I did it!

We lost Rhonda Honda last year at Heroes (2017) and got Romeo one year ago almost to the day. I still miss Rhonda occasionally, but Romeo is very fun to drive and I love him.

Nick’s job ended December 2017. While traumatic, we’ve done OK. My brief stint at Krobar helped with expenses and paired with the $4300 unemployment, got us through six months without touching savings. The fact that $4300 is the TOTAL of unemployment you get after paying in for 20+ years is disgusting. Truly disgusting.

Player One Arcade Services is over three years old and we are pursuing Player One Arcade Pub. It’s a frustrating battle to find a location, but all our money is in place, we just gotta FIND A LOCATION. Between flakey landlords and flakier real estate people, it’s slow going. But now, in July, we are running up the credit cards and starting to get into our savings. We really need to get started! We can’t pull any money from the account until the business is going and we can’t even pay ourselves until it is OPEN. Clock is ticking. We are stressed out.

I guess that covers the highlights of the last four years here in Tucker. 2018 has been the year of the pub and it has been our consuming goal. There was a girl at the Krobar that said she felt the pub wouldn’t get started until fall…Looks like she was right after all. Sigh. 2018 is an 11 year, so I’m hoping my lucky number will pull through for us. If we don’t get started soon, we’ll have to find jobs again. Which will suck. Kroger sucked balls. UGH. Pray to your gods for us. We really need to get the pub going, y’all. And: thanks for all your support! WE SEE YOU. <3

So, this is happening…

Remember over two years ago when we were hot to trot about opening a pub? Well, we have made that dream come true!

When Nick’s job ended and I began at Krobar, we really didn’t know what we’d do. One of Nick’s bosses had expressed interest in funding our pub idea, but then backed out. I was over it and figured I’d just work this shitty Kroger job and try not to get fired. Nick was over it, too.

One day, Nick was tooling around the intertubes, looking at various funding sites, etc., and he came across this thing called the ROBS Program from the IRS. There are several companies who administer them, but Nick contacted Guidant Financial.

When he told me about this Wile E Coyote plan, I was skeptical. Plus, it costs $5k to put it in place and $139/mo administration fees forever after that. But we discussed it and then had a call with a sales weasel from Guidant and after more discussion, we decided to do it.

What ROBS is, is a plan – fully backed by the IRS – that allows you to take your 401k money, roll it into a NEW 401k under your company name, then dump that money into your C corporation bank account. No penalties or fees, other than the $5k you pay Guidant to manage all the paperwork. They issue you “stock” for the $5k, so it’s sort of refunded.

Long story short: we now have $107,681.95 in the IndigoDragon Inc. bank account and we can now start looking for commercial real estate. :) (You can’t look at commercial real estate until you engage a realtor, and for that, you gotta have fat stacks in the bank. Now we do!!)

There are myriad rules when dealing with ROBS and the C corporation, but so far, Guidant support has been good. Dealing with a C corporation rather than the standard LLC or S corp that most small businesses use is a huge PITA, and we’ll get taxed twice (once on the corp and once on our income), but it is a strict rule and it’s the price we’ll pay until we can get out from under the ROBS program. I’m hoping 2-3 years and we can buy out of it and be on our own. But in any case, we are funded, and…

I’m making the announcement:

PLAYER ONE ARCADE PUB IS REAL. WE ARE DOING IT.

We are putting literally every bit of money we have into this project. We eat/sleep/breathe it. It’s all we talk about. Midlife crisis FTW!

I’ve quit the Krobar and shout out to Doug, Thaddeus, Cheri, Aaron, Miranda and everyone who made my last day a BLAST! Man, we had some fun up in the Krobar yesterday! LOL No adult supervision! Wheeeee! Ended up staying on for a bit longer, but they reduced the hours of the bar when I was off for Momo, so I did quit. The wine steward is out of that hellhole, too. FUCK KROGER.

If any of you would like to keep up with our progress on the bar, please follow the Player One Arcade Services FB page. Hopefully I can change the name again and use this page, but I’m not sure, since it’s been changed before. In any case, all announcements and news will be posted on the current FB page and the website. There are benefits to following along early, such as dry run invitations (FREE food and booze!), helping me create the menu and bar (I LOVE INPUT!) and being on our Friends and Family supporter list (discounts and perks!)! Come on over, give us a follow and let’s DO THIS!
