DJ health update

My DJ is not any better. His heart murmur is worse and he is still battling some sort of infection that causes him to stay stuffed up. We waited for almost 2 hours today to see a vet at Dearborn – and she spotted a mass of some kind near his heart in the xrays from last time. The other vet totally missed it. Well, she either totally missed it or didn’t want to say anything. I just want to KNOW so I can keep my emotions in check until I get to the root of the issue. I’m barely hanging onto my shit today… My heart is VERY heavy.

After the thorough exam and looking over the films from 10 wks ago, the vet told me that DJ was definitely throwing “red flags” and she’s very concerned. She said his murmur is the worst she’s EVER heard in a cat – it’s more like a good sized poodle. NOT GOOD. She’s also concerned about the mass… She’s thinking cancer, I know she is. Gods, I hope it’s not that. There’s no coming back from that for a 11.5 year old cat.

So, next week we’re off to St Francis over on Dekalb Ind for his full thorax ultrasound. That will tell us exactly what’s going on with him and if that mass is lymph nodes or cancer or what.

All I know is that DJ is not in pain (other than arthritis) and he’d be a lot happier if he could breathe. We’ve got him on another run of antibiotics to try and beat back the nasal infection and we’ll continue his other meds. He’s always been a lazy boy, but I think the heart murmur has really taken what little zip he had. He sleeps and/or lays down about 95% of the time now. Poor baby!

If everyone would send my sweet old cat some good health vibes, I’d appreciate it.

Pets – too many or too few

I’m doing my morning reading of the blogs, checking email, etc. a friend posted about her cat. Which brings to mind my Bernadette. ::sigh::

Bernie disppeared, which tells me that she was eaten or run over and what was left was disposed of by a stupid ghetto neighbor or DeKalb Animal Control. I can’t be certain, of course, but this is what I suspect. At least I didn’t have to see it – although not knowing is its own kind of suckage.

The friend’s cat was eaten by their asshole neighbor’s dog. The dog got loose and killed the cat while they were at DragonCon. The asshole neighbor took it to the vet and paid for the cremation, but that doesn’t really HELP bring back a dead pet. I don’t know, call me evil (many do), but I’d say that dog would suddenly get very ill. Maybe even die if I knew it had eaten my cat.

Yes, it’s not the dog’s fault, blah blah, but that’s not the point. The point would be to cause the asshole neighbor as much pain as he’d caused me. And by taking out the pet (which is vicious and should be put down anyway, IMO), you would give the neighbor an object lesson in why keeping vicious dogs is BAD.

If I knew for sure that the vicious pit bull down the street had eaten Bernie, I’d shoot it. No hesitation. They can take me to jail, whatever, but I’d shoot that dog and not think a thing of it. I don’t like dogs much in the first place and I certainly have zero tolerance for vicious ones. And let me tell you, ghetto dwellers here in Atlanta believe the more vicious the better. Assholes.

So, the friend has fewer pets than she did a few months back (she lost 2 ferrets, a hamster and now a cat) and so do I. I miss Bernie every day. She still has a herd o’ varmints, but it doesn’t matter how many you have, you still feel the loss of one. I’m down to two kitties and I’m good with that. I’ve decided to not get any more (if I can help it) because we are going to be traveling more and I don’t want to deal with petsitters, etc. You can’t travel much with several pets in the house.

My other friend has too many varmints. She began feeding a stray cat a few months back which promptly brought two kittens to the door. She’s got two cats indoors already. So, she’s been feeding the mama and two kittens. This week, the mama brought four more kittens to her door. For a grand total of SEVEN cats in her backyard. She’s currently trying to find somewhere that will fix them, vaccinate them and check them for diseases.

I guess there’s always a balance to be struck with pets. We all would like to empty out the animal shelters and love those poor babies who need love – but we can’t. I know people who take on too many pets and can’t care for them properly – that must be avoided. If you can’t afford health care for the pet (getting them fixed, vaccines, etc) then you can’t afford the pet, period.

There’s a sweet spot for every family with pets. Mine is actually three cats, but I’m letting the herd thin out. I’m planning ahead for circumstances that will compromise their quality of life (our traveling a lot). I do NOT believe that cats are fine all alone in an empty house. No way.

Whether you’ve too many or too few, take care of your pets. Feed them good food, get their vaccines and have the compassion to put them down when they are very sick.

We are their stewards and it’s our responsibility.

Pets bring so much happiness. And so much pain when they leave us. But we do it again and again. Someone needs to create a kitty that lives as long as we do. Now THAT would be some research I could get behind. :-)

Also: today is the 9/11 anniversary. I remember that day quite clearly. Everyone say a prayer that this sort of stupidity does not happen again anywhere.

Bernadette we’ll miss you ALWAYS

Well, it’s been 17 days. I guess we’ve got 2 cats now. I’m not one to give up easily, but what else can I do? Either she’s dead or she’s lost. I can’t help either way. It sucks sucks sucks.

For a small cat, she ate a lot. I’ve noticed a big reduction in kibble consumption. I always said she had a worm. I miss my lil grey striped huntress. When I told Andy about all this, he reminded me that she used to follow Hobbes around when she was a baby lurking in our yard at Derrydown. It took us weeks to get her tame enough to come into the house and be petted.

She got her name from a cartoon, naturally. There is a small grey stray cat in Animaniacs called Rita who was always singing. We didn’t want to call her Rita because Andy’s family had several pets named Rita, so we decided to use the voice of Rita, Bernadette Peters. So, our tiny little cat got a very big name.

Bernadette never did give up her claim to being feral, right up to the last time I saw her – having dinner on the back porch. She would hesitate before coming into the house every time. It took a minimum of two tries for her to enter. If there was anything amiss, forget it. When she was outdoors, we couldn’t get near her. She’d run away like she’d never seen us before. I’m sure it was a game, but at least part of it was her feral roots. She’d have her dinner al fresco much of the time if the weather was good. Despite all this, she’d still come inside most nights and cuddle up on the couch and purr purr purr. What a sweet little cat!

This ended up being Bernie’s eulogy. And I am so very sad for that.

Thanks to everyone for all the support.

Tuesday randomness

We are so frelling busy! But I thought I’d take a moment to post something, albeit random and not very cohesive. It’s so random, in fact, that it’ll be a list! Heh!

  • Freelancing is always feast or famine. Remind me of this during the next famine.
  • Some clients will not help themselves. Ever. It’s tough to deal with this sort, because they make us, the support people, feel somehow responsible for their unwillingness to make the changes necessary to smooth out their problems.
  • I wish I could draw more so I could do my own logo work. It’s hard to have to wait and wait for Nick to find the time to do the drawings.
  • I want to live somewhere with weather that is around 72-75ºF during the day and in the 50s at night all the time with low to medium humidity. Yes, it would get boring, but I think I could dig it for a year or so anyway.
  • The baby birds are still around the yard. They are not getting fed now, I guess it’s time to find their own food. The parents are still staying close, which is good considering that Bernie the Great Striped Huntress is hanging around the yard. Babies = Good Eats!
  • I had a female hummer come to the feeder yesterday.
  • Tori Amos is putting out a graphic novel this summer: Comic Book Tattoo. Get it.
  • I’m very grateful to have such awesome friends. No particular reason, just happy with our group. :-)
  • I really hate those teensy tinsy red spiders that bite.
  • I should be getting out of here and running errands right now.
  • I am very sorry for the girls who have sick ferrets. Those things (the ferrets, not the girls) are pretty much guaranteed to fall ill to something untreatable, aren’t they? They are cute, but I don’t think I’d recommend them for pets. They seem to be too high maintenance and too expensive to keep healthy for your average pet owner. I’ll stick to cats.
  • Speaking of pets, my brood needs their shots. ::sigh:: Gotta get that done.
  • Speaking of Drs that need to be seen: I need to get to the gyno for my exam. I think I skipped last year – I didn’t mean to, but I think I did. I’ve got to bite the bullet and go.

Ok, enough rambling. Gotta get to the grocery, do recycling and get back here to make calls for the taqueria. L8r.
