Sick days

Well, I finally caught my one germ of the season. It’s a weak little virus that illicits a very low (.5-1º) fever and a cough. It’s been going around in some form for a few weeks. I guess that little soiree the other night with Rebecca was the last straw for my immune system.

Yesterday I wasn’t very well, but I finished my work for the Moon and got a couple of errands done before collapsing on the couch. It’s the classic cough until you lose your voice bug. Eh, could be worse.

Today I’m ensconced in my little home, periodically futzing with the mac, laying on the couch and napping.

Hope everyone has a fun weekend! Mine will be more of the same.

Car Repair is a Racket

I just spent $955 on my fucking car and now it won’t start if it’s raining. The goddam asshole at the shop denies that it’s anything they’ve done, of course. Ugh, car repair is a racket. Finding a good mechanic is nigh impossible.

Asshole Dave @ RH Auto [now defunct because they sucked] wanted $600 for a new distributor plus labour, natch. NO. I called Honda and they wanted $300 to put in plug wires!! Can you believe the balls these people have? The distributor is around $400 (NOT $600) from Honda, but you can get an aftermarket for $135. The plug wires from Honda are $75 or $48 from NAPA. The distributor cap is $18. The rotor button is $11. So I got all new replacement parts for $100 from NAPA and I will do the fucking work myself. [I did replace all that stuff, but it all got replaced again when we did a big maintenance a few years later at Avondale Independent.]

I have used Avondale Independent in Avondale Estates for years now [Feb 2013]. They are not the cheapest, but they ARE the best, because they specialise in HONDA. Dave and Randy know their shit and they take great care of my now 19+ year old Civic EX. My Honda still gets ~30mpg in the city and almost 40mpg on the highway. TOP THAT, new cars!

I highly recommend Avondale Independent if you have a Honda, especially. They can work on anything, but Hondas are their specialty. :)

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Mmmm, I love Valentine’s Day! Everything is pink and red, love ooozes out of every ad, chocolate is everywhere!

I got my V Day present early: a 4x zoom lens for our Kodak camera! Thanks baby! Nick got it for me to take pix of my birdies at the feeders. :-)

We had a fun weekend. We went to the Magnapop show at Criminal Records Sat afternoon then hung out on the Brewhouse deck drinking beer.

Sunday was Dave’s birthday and a bunch of us (Pat, Bexxx, Caroline, Dru, Nick, Dave, Dori and me) had dinner at Harmony a totally vegetarian Chinese restaurant. It was outstanding! Not a scrap of animal products in anything and I didn’t feel like I was deprived at all! They use Texturized Vegetable Protein (TVP), which sounds nasty, but actually tastes like chicken, pork or beef. Weird! We then caravanned to Follies, Dave’s titty bar for lovely ladies, drinks and some really great music spun by Zac, the best dance music DJ in this town.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend and today it’s hard to get focused on the drudgery of work!

GAH! I’ve been busy!

Let’s see, what’s been happening since Groundhog Day??

Well, we attended Caroline’s Chinese New Year party and had a totally FABulous time! Thanks for hosting, C!

We attended Beth’s Super Bowl party and had a great time there, thanks Beth for hosting!

We went to L5P on Monday for our Criminal Records – Vortex – shopping ritual. Nick got some Doc Martens (finally) and a pr of Converse high tops in black suede for 1/2 price!

I’ve done my Moon thing this week and I have a ton of crap to do for a couple of gigs we’ve got. I’ve got to finish Dave’s biz card, get Crescent Moon’s table tents laid out and crank out the templates for Oracle 20/20’s new website.

Now, this doesn’t include wrangling the plumber and HVAC girls, checking out a sale at the Mall, grocery shopping and dealing with my car that has decided to act flaky. It also doesn’t include birthdays: Denna, Dani, Dave & Chris. OR Valentine’s Day! ARGH!!

In addition, there is a metric shit ton of things going on this weekend, such as:
-Magnapop plays at Criminal Records in L5P Sat at 2pm.
-The new bar in L5P, the L5P Corner Pub, is supposed to open Sat.
-Lil Chris is having birthday festivities at the Highlander Sat night.
-The Goodwill Book Sale is this Sat-Sun and canNOT be missed! Anyone who wants to go, I suggest coming down here early Sunday before Dave’s party.
-Dave’s birthday is Sun and we’re to have dinner at Harmony then go to the titty bar to celebrate with him.

Plenty to do!

Please email me if you’d like to attend any of these things so I can coordinate vehicles and times.

Old cars!

While it is oh-so-niiiiice to not have a car payment and to get cheap tags, it really sucks out loud when the damn things need repairs!

Today, I go out to start the car and take it for an oil change and to fix the passenger window that died about 2 years ago. Well, I pull out of the carport and see about 1/2 cup of fluid on the floor… I got out and saw that it was coolant. FUCK! I knew what that meant: dead water pump. So, I limp it over to RH and they confirm that yes, I do have a dead water pump, which means that I now get to pay for ANOTHER timing belt (the one in there has only about 30k on it), a new water pump and to fix the oil seepage, I’ll need a new valve cover gasket (which I knew). All that adds up to about $700 in parts and labour. FINE. I am also getting the frelling window fixed now, too, although I’m certain I won’t get off with a $75 switch, I’m sure it’ll be a $300 motor for the goddam thing.

FRELL.

I really, truly want a newer car, but after all this, what’s the point? Hell, the Honda will be good as new other than the pesky noisy transmission. I may get rid of it now and save myself the next expense of clutch/transmission work.

Dunno. It’s such a pain in the ass to deal with cars! I could sell this one outright and then look for another, I suppose. Feh. I guess I should get something else before I really do have to chunk another coupla grand into this one. It’s value is about $4500 I think. Something to contemplate.

[Never did replace her! She’s still running great at 160k miles! 30mpg in the city! Never gonna get rid of this 1994 Honda Civic EX until she dies. -A 2015]
